Customs and tradition, as well as culture, are very important in the Lungau: In addition to museums, pilgrimage churches, old palaces and castles, the Lungau also offers unique customs that are the expression of a long tradition and have hardly changed at all to this day. Such as the Lungau Easter fire, the “Prangstangen processions” or the “Samson parades” and water target shooting at the Prebersee in the Lungau.

Mariapfarr is not only the sunniest place in Austria, but also a “Silent Night, Holy Night” parish. In 1816 Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics to this probably most famous Christmas song in the world. Since 2018 the pilgrimage church in Mariapfarr was raised to basilica minor by Pope Francis.

Events such as the medieval festival, the “Samsonman running marathon”, a choir festival, the traditional Lungau family festival at the beginning of August, the “Tour de Mur”, “Samson parades” and much more are offered in the Lungau.
